For a long time the Health Belief Model (HBM) has been used to explain human health behaviour. Sometimes the theory has also been used to explain food choice behaviour. Questions have, however, been raised about the usefulness of this model in human food choice. You are asked to come up with an alternative model for human food choice and you need to argue why you think this model would be better in understanding human food choice. To guide you, I have provided some directions belowAnalyse and critique the HBMYou need to show the reader that you have a good understanding of the HBM and that you are aware of its strength and weaknesses. You can do this by comparing the HBM with other food choice model and by consulting the scientific literatureIn this section you explain the elements of the HBM and how this is thought to explain human food choice behaviour.Next, you need to critique the HBM. Why do you think this model would not be a very good predictor of human food choice?Identify and explain alternative drivers of human food choiceYou need to show that you are aware of the wide variety of drivers of human food choice and why these drivers are important.Argue why other drivers of food choice (for example taste preferences) are also important for human food choice, but are not included in the HBM.Show and explain your alternative model of food choiceShow in a figure an alternative model of food choice. Show (visually) the relationship between the different drivers of food choice and explain these relationships in the body of the textDiscuss and critique your proposed model of food choiceNo model is perfect. In this section you need to critique your own model. What is good and what is bad about it.
