Section I: Summarize the main arguments of the text/film in 300-400 words In the first sentence, you should introduce the title of the work you’re summarizing and the author(s). Focus only on what this text says. Describe the arguments and main points so that someone would understand what the text was about if they’d only read your summary. Do not refer to other works and do not include your own assessments of what the text says in the summary section. Use signal phrases to indicate that the ideas you are presenting come from the source you’re summarizing. For example: “the author argues,” “the author claims,” “she notes,” “he criticizes,” etc. You may use quotations in the summary if you want, but the total number of lines dedicated to quotations should not exceed 2 lines. Use in-text citations for all quotes and paraphrases. Section II - Respond to the article in 300-400 words Answer all of the following questions in the response section: What do you agree with? What do you disagree with? What are your thoughts on what the text says? How do this text’s claims compare or contrast to other texts in the course? You may use quotations if you want, but the total number of lines dedicated to quotations should not exceed 2 lines. Use in-text citations for all quotes and paraphrases. Do not use any sources we haven’t read in the course. Grading Rubric for Response Papers: 40% Summary section seems to accurately describe the assigned text. 40% Response section seems to demonstrate critical thought about the text and other texts in the class. 10% Paper format and length seem to be correct (400-800 words is around 1.5-3 pages). 10% Paper is written in Standard American English, and sentence-level errors do not interfere with understanding. Please note I will not provide much or any feedback on response papers. I generally skim these papers only to make sure they’re generally on track. Feedback is provided for all other writing assignments in the course. Instructions for All Writing Assignments Format Notes Use Times New Roman size 12 font, 1-inch margins, and double space the paper. Do not include a title page. Do not include a bibliography or works cited page on a response paper. In-text citations should be in MLA form, which requires you to add a parenthetical at the end of any sentence or clause that has been quoted or paraphrased. The parenthetical should list the last name of the author (if not already stated in the signal phrase) and the page number the quote or paraphrase came from (if the source has page numbers). For more help with MLA, see OWL RSCC’s page. Examples of in-text citations using MLA parenthetical citations: • Despite the importance of political organizing around sexuality, it is clear “sexual orientation cannot exist without gender identity” (Jones 22). • Livingstone considers gendered desires a natural phenomenon (14), but Leung considers it learned behavior (342).

Section 1
Gloria Anzaldua is the author of “Speaking In Tongues: A Letter to 3rd World Women Writers”. Her work was published on 21st May 19
80. From the first, paragraph, it is evident that her work is mainly directed at Women of color who have been oppressed and looked down upon for many years by different people- especially the whites. She shows her ability to fight for women’s rights so that they can be emancipated. Gloria states that she had a hard time deciding whether the put her writing into a poem or a letter, especially after starting it out as a long poem. Eventually, she decides to write a letter that is directed towards the black woman- woman of color.
From the start, one can easily see Gloria as a concerned woman, a rebellious writer and a rebel of sorts. This is seen through her work which directly addresses other women writers, women of color and the entire female generation. She tries to visualize women by understanding what they actually do in real life- as lesbians, single mothers or writers. She is concerned about the dangers faced by women writers by comparing their lives to that of white writers. Women of color, according to her, did not have any privileges. In addition, they face dangers and as such, they must overcome them. She is rebellious in the sense that she does not like the white culture that was imposed on other races. This includes forcing others to learn the English language, yet, the whites do not bother learning theirs. Further, she calls women of color “beasts” because they must fight hard to wipe away stereotypes and the negative image associated with them. Through her work, it is evident that she creates awareness on how important Women of color are and the need for them to rise up and fight for equality
Section II
