Introduction
The topic of my thesis is “How does Chinese and Italian immigrant protect the conservation of their traditional values and customs in their community?” In reference to this topic, this paper will give a brief about my presentation where I have given the background regarding about the immigrants from China and Italy. In addition to this, it will be discussed about the difference and similarities between them.
Further, their purpose of immigration will be highlighted, along with the role; they have played in their community. All this will be considered under the topic of conserving their traditional values and customs. Later on, this paper focuses on the lifestyle and changes with the social sustainability of their values. Lastly, it will be discussed about the importance of preservation of values and culture, their significance in other countries and challenges that comes in a way.
Overview
Background
Foreigners have flocked to America since the Pilgrims to the boat people of today. Some immigrants find themselves in the middle of two worlds with two separate cultures. They enter this society with different behavioural styles and ideals than the host culture and they find themselves cut off from it. Immigrants must learn host cultural patterns in order to acculturate themselves to the new culture. Communication aids in the cultural awareness and subsequent adaption process may work. Most immigrants, fortunately, eventually figure out how to make sense of their new "reality." They get a deeper understanding of the culture's norms and values while simultaneously safeguarding their own[footnoteRef:1]. Between 1820 and 2004, around 5.5 million Italians moved to the United States in different waves, with the biggest number entering in the twentieth century from Southern Italy. In 1870, there were less than 25,000 Italian immigrants in America; the majority of them were Northern Italian refugees fleeing the Risorgimento's battles[footnoteRef:2]. However, Chinese immigrants came to the United States, hoping to flee China's economic turmoil. They were eager to try their luck in the California gold rush. Train employees, laundry workers, domestics, gardeners and, most notably, farmhands were all easy jobs for them. The Exclusion Act was eventually overturned in 1943, when China became an ally of the United States in World War II[footnoteRef:3]. Contrast and Similarities
The Opium War second, which lasted from 1856 to 1860, pitted the British Empire and the French Empire against China's Qing dynasty. The treaty, which obliged China to pay a $21 million indemnity, caused the Chinese royal order to crumble. This paving the stage for uprisings likes the Boxer and Taiping rebellions. In addition to this, the 19th-century social and political movement that resulted in the unification of the many kingdoms of the Italian Peninsula into a single state was known as Italian unification. The majority of emigrants came from Southern Italy's agricultural and rural regions, where most of the population had been impoverished by centuries of foreign misrule and high tax loads[footnoteRef:4]. Both Italy and China saw similar socioeconomic distribution as an outcome of the war. As a result, individuals were forced to leave their homeland. There were differences in natural catastrophes between countries. For instance, during the colonial period, China's population more than quadrupled, from 150 million to nearly 300 million and then increased by 56 percent between 1779 and 1850. Better intensive irrigation and the development of faster ripening rice strains allowed for double cropping as an outcome of population expansion. However, it also resulted in hill erosion and the emergence of a labour excess, particularly in densely populated places such as the lower Yangtze delta.
In addition, Cholera originally occurred in Europe and hence in Italy. This took place in the first part of the nineteenth century. Due to starvation and there was no food in both nations due to agricultural issues. Peasants in Italy's largely impoverished, mostly rural south and on the island of Sicily had little chance of changing their situation. China has had rapid population increase, which has influenced food consumption, while Italy has not. Thousands of people died in Italy as an outcome of illnesses such as Cholera. One more difference is that Italian immigrants were state-sponsored, implying that the government pushed emigration to ease the economic strains brought on by the war[footnoteRef:5].
