First Task:The Exercise for Your Imagination
Imagine you are a society of persons: You are a mother and a father, you are children and their relatives, you are a police officer and social worker, psychologist and family doctor, teacher and neighbor and co-worker…all of the people related, from those by blood to those only by citizenship, to the life of a woman who is systematically abused by a violent spouse and who insists upon staying in what she calls her home.
Second Task:The Writing Assignment
Reading Exercise 8 asked you to imagine the non-violent social program of Martin Luther King Jr. being used to address violence in a home. A program intended to confront injustice on the large scale was drawn into the smaller and more personal region of the family dwelling. Marilyn Friedman is concerned with the lives of victims of abuse, particularly women, in the household setting. It could be said, then, that she is making an effort to confront injustice as well.
