First Impressions for Success: Insights from
Social Psychology

**Deadline extended. This assignment will bedue on Sunday, September 27th at 11:59 pm
(as usual, late assignments are not accepted)**

The main goal of this assignment is to apply what you are learning about forming and managing impressions in a real-world way (Chapter 4 and other readings for this chapter, as applicable).

I would like you to create a brochure that could be used at a career center to help college students make a best first impression when searching for jobs.

    • To make a brochure, you should be able to go to google docs or Microsoft Word if that's your preference and you can either change the page layout from one column to three columns and the page orientation from portrait to landscape. What will be the front folded page of the brochure should include at least the title of the assignment, your name, and the semester. Or you can click on templates for brochure that appear when you open word.

    • If using google docs - see:Video: Making a Brochure in Google Docsand/orWiki: Three Ways to Make a Brochure in Google Docs

Organization and Function of the Brochure:

    • Each "page" of the brochure will contain information about managing impressions in a job/career setting.

    • It should be a brochure that you yourself would be interested in grabbing at a career center.

    • The title/heading for each section should be apparent (i.e., not same size as the text underneath). The title and headings should be larger and perhaps in bold, italics, or underlined font. And/or color if you'd prefer - as long as the color is not too light - it should be readable for anyone! :

    • Print your brochure for yourself (you can just print in black and white), to make sure that it is correctly done and foldable like brochures are supposed to be (you can even grab a brochure from around campus to check the format if it helps).

    • Avoid using too much text - you should not write information in paragraphs; use bullet points instead.

Elements To Include and to Consider for Your Brochure:

  • You should include a section in your brochure on résumé writing that explores the ways to maximize your resume with reference to how we manage impressions and process information (e.g., order of or placement of the sections and words in, as well as any other aspects of the resume that you think are important from the textbook and other readings you check out).

  • Another section could include body language. If you would rather not include body language, you could include speaking voice, appearance, etc. If you have a section that is different section in mind, check with me at least a few days in advance, so I can approve it.

  • Another section of the brochure should focus on how to effectively manage impressions during interviews (i.e., tips on impression-management from our textbook, class, and scientific psychology sources).

    • When you are constructing and deciding what to include in this brochure, think about how we, as people, form impressions of others and how even subtle cues can impact our impressions of others, and the same with their impressions of us.

      • You might consider for instance, when talking about the interviewing aspect of the process - how impressions are based on perceived similarity, perception of one's personality characteristics (e.g., trustworthiness, warmth, competence), motivations/intentions/goals, and affect (i.e., nonverbal cues like body language and facial expressions).

      • Use Chapter 4, the lectures, and your notes to guide your decisions.

      • Also use these articles as they can be helpful (no need to cite them):Check These Helpful Articles Out - Helpful For Assignment #3

      • Please ask me if you're unsure that you are doing this correctly at least a few days before the deadline.

        • I might not be able to speak with you and to help you at the last minute.

      • GO BEYOND - don't just go with the "basic stuff" here.

        • Avoid looking up and using "tips on interviewing and making good impressions" on a random websites on the internet.

          • Instead, use social psychology research and concepts, from the book, lecture, and valid scientific articles (like the ones I included in this module) to guide what you include in your brochure.

          • Please check out the rubric! You'll be evaluated on the content (the information), the organization/aesthetic appeal of your brochure, and spelling/grammar/punctuation
