The error is 'biter'. The correction is 'bitter'. The source is that Arabic is a phonetic language, what is written is pronounced.' OR, Double English letters represent one sound in English but two sounds in Arabic. 4. * /bensl/ for the word 'pencil’. The error is /bensl/ The correction is /pensl/ The source is that the English sound /p/ is not available in Arabic. Arab learners replace it with its nearest Arabic sound /b/. 5. * /Sin/ for the word 'sing'. The error is /sIn/ The correction is /sIƞ/. The source is that the sound /n/ is not available in Arabic. Arab learners replace it with its nearest sounding with the two sounds /n+g). 6. * He has a special car. The error is 'special car'. The correction is 'private car'. The source is that the English noun 'car' collocates with the adjective 'private' not with 'special' as in the Arabic language. 7. * She is afraid from her elder bother. The error is 'afraid form' The correction is 'afraid of'. The source is that the English adjective 'afraid' collocates with 'of' not with 'from' as in the Arabic language. 8. * We learn English, isn't it? The error is 'isn't it'. The correction is 'don't we' The source is that there is one pattern for tag-questions in Arabic. In English, tag-questions depend on the verb and its subject. 9. * Look! What you did. The error is 'did'. The correction is 'have done'. The source is that Arabic does not have a well-defined counterpart for the English perfect tense. Arab learners use the past tense instead of the English present perfect tense. 10. * I am living here since 1928. The error is 'am living'. The correction is 'have been living'. The source is that that Arabic does not have a well-defined counterpart for the English perfect tense. Arab learners may use the English present continuous instead of the English present perfect continuous tense. A project (10 Marks) Each student is supposed to find out (10) errors which are committed by Arab learners. These errors are from your experience as a learner of EFL or ESL, references or the internet. They are done with the following instructions: 1. They are done in the following steps: error, its correction and source (reason). 2. They should be in different levels of linguistics (i.e. phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics). 3. They are not similar in any way or another to the above (10) discussed examples. 4. The answers should be typed. (Handwriting is not accepted.) 5. Each student should be working alone.
