Title of Article: State of shock:
200-year-old law about gas mixtures called into question
Date of Publication: December 11, 2019
Author’s Qualifications: Graduate, University of New Mexico
    Noteworthy
Gas laws describing the behaviour of gas mixtures are not applicable in the presence of shock waves. This is also applicable for nuclear and conventional explosions.
    Evidence
In a study conducted at University of New Mexico two gases namely light helium and heavy sulfur hexafluoride and the properties of the resultant were studied. A shock wave was then passed through the resultant mixture. The pressure and temperature after the shock compression was not as expected through the classical theories of Dalton or Amagat.
What does this have to do with me?
This study changed my perception of the classical gas laws and theories and made me gain deeper knowledge so that I can keep myself updated on the latest advancements. These impacts may lead to changes in designs of engines.
