English 101: Research Argumentative Paper RAP (Final Exams) Los Angeles Valley College FALL 2021—Prof Millie Moncada DESCRIPTION: The research paper will focus on a specific argumentative essay you will be provided from a list of dealing with the following issues: cultural myths of family, biological extinction, the melting pot, gender, technology, imprisonment, nature/environment, etc… This means there are 2 to 3 students who will be working on a particular essay. Consider this paper as an academic endeavor. REQUIREMENTS: · 8-10 pages in length. This includes the Works Cited page and the title page. · Typed, double-spaced, with 1” margins on all sides. Title page is required. · Times New Roman on a 14pt. font is required. · Follow the MLA format guidelines for the first page of your paper. · Follow the MLA format guidelines for your paper’s page numbers. · Provide a separate Works Cited list that conforms to the MLA format style. · Use at least four documented library sources, primary and secondary sources. Scholarly sources (books or scholarly journals) are the most credible. Sources should vary in types and not be one kind. (For example, don’t use all books or all journals as your sources.) No Wikipedia, nor Google. THE RESEARCH PROCESS: a) Determine the focus of your topic. The rhetorical mode to use for this research paper is PREFERABLY argumentative or persuasive or a combination of both(i.e., presents pros and cons), it must develop an argument. Remember that the research paper is not solely a report or summary. b) Conduct your research: Visit the LAVC library online and seek the help of the Writing Center and its Reference sections, refer to Library Modules- this Canvas. c) Manage and take notes on information: Keep a working bibliography, which you will turn into your Works Cited list for the final draft. Take notes about your responses to the information you find. d) Organize your evidence under individual body paragraphs. Remember one supporting idea per body paragraph. e) Long Quotations (Block Quote): When a quotation takes up more than 4 typed lines of prose or three lines of verse, set it off from the text by indenting the entire quotation one inch (ten spaces) from both the left and right margins. Use single-space for the long indented quotation and decrease the font size to 9 or 10”, and add extra space above and below it. Quotation marks are not needed. Final drafts which fail to include a Works Cited or fail to cite correctly, meaning citations in the essay do not match the citations in the Work Cited page, will not receive an overall grade.
