Definition of Geography
There are a number of statements put forth by geographers to define the term geography. Some individuals define geography as the study of the world and what is contained in it including people, animals, plants, and the interactions that take place between these variables. Others define geography as the study of the earth, the physical features found on it, and human life together with the effects of human activity. Finally, others propose that geography is the study of the earth’s surface, and responses of people on the earth’s topography, soil, climate, and vegetation. Therefore, it can be concluded that geography entails the study of relationships that exist between natural environments and human societies (Blij, n.d, pp. 6-7).
Own Understanding of the Spatial Perspective
Spatial perspective is a subfield of geography that is concerned with the study of properties that differ with respect to geographical location. Basically, spatial perspective entails quantitative analysis where geographers study traditions, technologies, and methods found in different parts of the earth. The central theme for geographers under spatial perspective is ‘where,’ which helps them gain a better understanding of a given phenomenon under study (Wentz & Miller, 2003, p. 575). Given this consideration, spatial perspective is termed vital for the study of geography. This is because the perspective is employed in the study of various fields under geography such as cultural geography, political geography, and physical geography. The concept of spatial perspective is useful in daily activities. For instance, business people use spatial perspective to decide on where a new plant is to be located. Real estate developers use spatial perspective of geography to decide where a new building development is to be situated. Individuals use spatial perspective to decide on where their new vacation will be, or where to find a job, or school. Therefore, it can be concluded that the concept of spatial perspective is useful in daily activities and is not only pinned to geography (“Introduction to Geography,” n.d).
A Discussion of Kagan’s Notion that History is Returning
In his argument, Kagan begins by refuting the notion held by many that the end of Cold War implied end of history. He holds that the fall of communism implied that capitalism was the only acceptable economic system while liberal democracy the only viable political regime. All nations were to become liberal capitalist democracies and upon which peaceful trade was to be established, replacing the bellicose rivalries of the past. However, Kagan asserts that such an outcome has never been realized and there are no signs of it been achieved. Contrary, the...
