The movie Black Swan presents the story of Nina, a young female's devastating pathway through her initial psychotic episode. Psychosis is a mental disorder characterized by a loss of contact with reality. She is in her twenties and is disengaged from everyone, both of which are characteristics shared by individuals suffering their first psychotic episode. Her psychotic symptoms worsen over time, as they do in most real-life contexts (Walls & McKenzie, 2019). Nina's perceptual disturbance is manifested by hallucinations, which progress from shadows as well as seeing her face on other individuals to Nina's presumption that she has been physically turning into a swan. The film ends with Nina fatally wounding herself with a piece of mirror, asserting that she attacked Lily whilst fighting over who might dance in the final act of Swan Lake.
