Figure illustrates a typical modern-day foundation cross-section, which uses a concrete foundation with concrete trench blocks and two skins of engineering brickwork.
Using basic mensuration techniques, calculate and accurately record the following:

a. the centre line length from the plan drawings of the foundation

b. the volumes of concrete and excavation (ignoring any backfill)

c. the area of the earthwork support to the sides of the excavation

d. the total square metres of engineering brickwork

e. the length of the damp-proof course that will be placed on top of the engineering brickwork.

In order to achieve P2 you will need to undertake some further measurements from Figure 9.4, that contain omits and adds, then prepare an abstract of these quantities so a final total can be obtained. Your tutor will direct this assessment. In undertaking your take-off to the activity P1 , ensure that you apply the rules of the Standard Method of Measurement to the production of the accurate quantities and descriptions listed in items b to e. Ask your tutor for a copy of the relevant sections from SMM7.
