Alaska recorded near Sao Paulo in Brazil on a vertical-component station. ˜
(a) Is this most likely a Rayleigh or a Love wave? Why?
(b) Measure the average time and the time separation between successive waveform troughs over the interval from 3200 s to 3600 s. Use your results to make
a table of velocity as a function of the wave period (Hint: 1◦ = 111.19 km).
Is this a measure of group or phase velocity? How do your results compare
to the PREM predictions in Figure 8.6?
