I'm giving you an

this time to either watch a video, read a chapter from a great book, or do your own experimental research! The experiment (see instructions at the bottom) will take significantly more time and effort.

OPTION A: Inequality documentary viewing and response:
CHOOSE ONE of the following filmsto watch, and then answer the questions:

OPTION C:
Experimental Research.
See if/how people respond differently
depending on the status label they place on you.
CHOOSE ONE oftwo variables:Either weardifferent clothes("professional" vs "sloppy/subcultural"); or partner up with someone of a
different racial group or gender(they don't have to be in the class).
Walk into at least
5 stores with each variation
(so there should be two separate interactions in each location: if putting on different clothes, leave an hour between; if working with a partner, just go in one at a time and don't let them see you together).
Browse
for a few minutes at every store,
buy something off the shelf
at one,
ask for something behind the counter or use a card
at one, and
hang out for a few minutes without buying
anything at another. Try to act exactly the same each time, as the only variable changing should be clothes or race/gender.
Take notes as soon as you leave each store, and summarize what you find, and any differences you notice, by answering the questions below.
1. How do people actwhen you enter and exit (words, facial expressions)?
2. How much do they pay attention to you as you are walking around?
3. How quickly do they serve you when you approach the counter?
4. Do they ask for an ID when you use a card or buy something that requires one (don't try to buy anything that is not actually legal for you to purchase!)?
5. Anything else that stands out?
