STAFFORDSHIRE UNIVERSITY Faculty of Computing, Engineering and Sciences Group (up to 3) Assignment Module Title: Environmental impact Module code: CE00131-5 Topic: 'Cleaner' design Overview The concept of 'Cleaner' design attempts to reduce or minimise the environmental impact of a product over its lifecycle without impacting on quality. A clean design may, for example, use a minimum number of components, have ease of disassembly and have easily re-used or recyclable components. In addition to eliminating waste this concept may also increase product functionality and profitability. Specific You will be supplied, in a pre-arranged laboratory session in F12, with an item of everyday technology e.g. hair dryer or steam iron, which you will dismantle under technician supervision. Based on your findings during the disassembly and from subsequent research, prepare a report (2000 words approx) evaluating the product with respect to its cleaner design aspects. Areas of investigation should include: Components: Identifying unnecessary parts Construction: How efficient is the construction? Materials: Are they reusable/recyclable/biodegradable? Packaging(if supplied): Identifying unnecessary packaging Dismantling: Ease of dismantling in time and cost terms In-use emissions and the regulatory environment This assignment is part of the overall assessment for this module and contributes 100% to the final module mark.

Study of Cleaner Design: Hair Dryer

University
Introduction
Modernization of individual lifestyle has made the people tech savvy and induced them to make
use of several electronic, mechanical and technical gadgets, which can ease their efforts and and
enhance the efficiency of operation. However, it is also being the part of such habit that these
gadgets cause severe environmental impacts in t
heir respective product life cycle. In order to
understand the influence of such products and minimize its impact on the environment, the
concept of ‘clean design’ has taken place in engineering and manufacturing of the specific
products. In consideration to such facts an attempt is made to understand the actual configuration
of a specific daily use product, such as hair dryer, through dismantling process and examining
the hair dryer components on the basis of the cleaner design criteria, actual components used and
its specific characteristics (biodegradability, re-usability, etc) and impact on the environment.
Specific efforts are made to dismantle the hair-dryer and make an evaluative examination
of the product components, under the supervision of the technical expert. The prime objective of
the efforts was to understand the significance of clean design, which restricts the environmental
impact of the products, without compromising the quality of the products. It's also the point of
consideration that how the clean design factors not only helps in elimination of wastes but also
enhances the functionality and profitability related to the specific product. The overall evaluation
outcome has been described under different segments, which has been incorporated as methods
of dismantling, analysis of examination or evaluative outcome and the respective discussion or
conclusion in consideration to specific insight development through such experimental
proceedings.
Methods of Dismantaling
For the experimentation purpose the everyday technology equipment selected is Hair
Dryer, which is commonly used and available in the household items for the purpose of hair
drying and hair styling. It utilizes the basic phenomenon of accelerating the evaporation of water
droplets from the surface of the hair through heated air blow. It is the well known principle that
hot air removes the moisture from any substance and can from much more effectively than that
of cold air. Considering such concept of material science the basic product of hair dryer has been
designed, which generates hot air to evaporate the water from the individual’s hair and different
levels of heating arrangement facilitates different hair styling. (Askara et. al, 2009)
In order to examine the actual mechanism and fabricated components of the hair dryer, an
exclusive efforts of dismantling the Remington Hair Dryer equipment has been performed. To
perform the disassembly of the hair dryer specific tools have been used, such as drill, pliers,
screwdriver, saw, etc. During the disassembly process specific efforts have been made to avoid
any breakage in the parts so that they can be reassembled again. The overall process of
disassembling the hair dryer initiated and completed through the following processes:
Step 1: Hair Dryer has been unplugged from the power source to avoid electric shocks that may
occur if any such operations of disassembly is performed without disconnecting the power
supply of the hair dryer.
Step 2: In next step screws located near the place, where the nozzle connects with the body has
been unscrewed, so that both the parts of the hair dryer body shell can be separated from each
other. All screws were kept in safe place so that they can be regained at time of assembly of the
hair dryer.
Step 3: After removal of the hair dryer housing the main components, which became visible were
the healing elements and the fan. To dismantle the heating element and fan from their place it
was needed to unscrew the four screws which were installed to hold the heating element and its
components. Heating element has been unscrewed and removed, which has been located behind
the fan.
Step 4: The...
