Sustainable water management is the ability to meet the water needs of the present without compromising the requirements of the future generations to do the same. Achieving sustainable water management requires a multidisciplinary and holistic approach. It takes into consideration environmental, landscape aesthetic, societal, economic, and cultural issues are addressed. It also means that a nation should be water self-sufficient, and that there should be enough water available to meet different needs, like municipal, industrial, agricultural needs, etc.
Australia faces water shortage due to its unpredictable climatic conditions. Low rainfall is one of the major reasons of water scarcity. There is very little evaporation that would lead to the formation of rainclouds, because of the cold ocean currents off the west coast (Heggie, 2020). Also, the Great Dividing Range that runs down Australia’s east coast serves as barrier for rain from penetrating far inland. The hot weather aids to water loss by evaporation, and the absence of mountain ranges does not help in pushing the air upwards which would help it cool into rain. Also, the Continent is highly susceptible to prolonged periods of high temperature and droughts.
On the other hand, water scarcity in India is largely due to its huge population size (Khadka, 2020). The country is the largest user of groundwater, and nearly 89% of groundwater is extracted for irrigation purposes. (Water In Crisis - Spotlight India, 2020) Contamination for water sources with chemical wastes from industries is another major reason for scarcity of usable water. The low availability of freshwater, and the high temperature conditions often result in drying up of rivers and water reservoirs.
