Transmission of Botulism
Botulism might be defined as; an unusual, but severe paraly
tic disease which can be
caused by a nerve toxin generated by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. This illness can be of
following four types:
1. Food-borne botulism
2. Wound botulism
3. Infant botulism, and
4. Adult intestinal colonization botulism (Long, 2008).
Food-borne botulism might occur owing to consumption of food contaminated by
botulism toxin or spores. Wound botulism may be caused via entry and further reproduction of
Clostridium botulinum’s spores into an open wound. Such entry can take place due to
contamination of wound by soil or gravel. Besides, inappropriate treatment of open fracture and
application of injectable street drugs could also be called a key reason of wound botulism (Reddy
& Bleck, 2009). Further, Infant botulism might happen due to ingestion of Clostridium
