Sustainability thinking emphasises the need to meet today’s needs without compromising the capabilities of future generations to attain their desires. This thinking has been crucial in the manner in which rising trends, threats, risks, and opportunities are approached by organisations (Senge, et al., 2008). Sustainability thinking plays a crucial role in crisis management. Previous research studies have shown that organisations, which were guided by sustainability thinking, were better at managing any arising risks (Ducassy, 2012).
Following a wholistic system thinking that views the organisation’s interrelationships and interdependencies within its environment as integral to its decisions, further improves the manner in which crises can be managed (Senge, et al., 2008). For instance, public perception with regard to a risk or crisis an organisation or nation is facing (for example, pollution claims) may affect negatively the company’s reputation.
