KEY: d’ (sensitivity) Shows how sensitive the participant was in believing that the target had a weapon PARTICIPANTS 3 GROUPS 124 DENVER POLICE OFFICERS 127 CIVILIANS FROM THE DENVER AREA WHERE THOSE POLICE PATROL 113 POLICE OFFICERS FROM AROUND THE NATION RESULTS The participants were relatively equally able to differentiate between armed and unarmed targets no matter what the race of the target was, however, the civilian participants showed more of a bias in favor of the “SHOOT” response when the target was black than did the police officers. THE RESULTS SHOW THAT PARTICIPANTS’ BEHAVIOR AND RESPONSES ORIGINATE FROM PREJUDICES, STEREOTYPES AND BIAS THAT THEY MAY OR MAY NOT EVEN BE AWARE THEY HAVE. THIS IS RELEVANT TO US ALL BECAUSE IT AFFECTS HOW WE TREAT PEOPLE AND HOW PEOPLE VIEW AND TREAT US. IT MAKES THE DIFFERENCE IN SOME CASES WHETHER YOU LITERALLY LIVE OR DIE, WHETHER YOU GET THAT JOB THAT YOU DESERVE OR WHETHER YOU ARE JUST SIMPLY TREATED WITH RESPECT.
