Expectancy theory postulates that motivation is largely influenced by a multiplicative combination of a person’s belief that effort will lead to performance, that performance will lead to specific outcomes, and that these outcomes are valued by the individual. There is mixed support for this theory. Many researchers believe that the theory best explains motivation in countries characterized by an internal locus of control.
