Expand or modify the template from Prob. 12.1 to handle a single-shear connection with a steel side plate. Input remains the same except the ultimate tensile strength of the metal side plate replaces the specific gravity of the side member.
Prob. 12.1
Use spreadsheet or programming software to set up a template for the solution of the yield limit equations for a laterally loaded nail. Consider a single-shear wood-to-wood connection, using the following variables for input: Nail diameter D Nail length l Thickness of side member Specific gravity of the side member Thickness of main member tm Specific gravity of main member The template is to do the following:
a. Compute the dowel bearing strength for the side and main members and.
b. Determine the dowel bearing length of the nail in the main member.
c. Evaluate the coefficients for use in the yield limit equations.
d. Solve the six yield limit equations and select the smallest value as the reference design value Z.
