On May 14, 2020, the Australian government announced that it had officially put on hold the review for a new international development policy, originally announced in December 2019.The government was planning to release a long term international development policy. This was disrupted by COVID-19 and the government has instead released an interim two-year policy response calledPartnerships for Recovery. COVID-19 has exposed the cracks in our societies. Australian Aid – self-centred or world-centred
The world was moving in a certain direction before Covid- 19, now, it’s moving in another. Before Covid-19, people and governments were making plans on how to achieve further growth and economi
c development. Now, focus has drastically shifted to meeting ends, avoiding the worst economic situation, and providing basic support to one and all. Australia was riding the same tide originally and a new international development policy was to be detailed after being announced in December 2019. However, due to Covid-19, this had to change and instead, an interim two-year policy was created, titled ‘Partnerships for Recovery’ (Cornish, 2020). This document contains major details regarding the key strategy that Australia will adopt in response to Covid-19 and its impact in the Indo-Pacific region (Australian Government, 2020).
The focus of the two-year policy is divided into three core action areas, Health security, Stability and Economic recovery with a special focus on protecting vulnerable entities i.e., women and girls. The high-quality support will adopt a flexible and adaptive approach as the future of the pandemic seems unpredictable and multiple waves of infections are expected. The efforts of the Australian aid budget will concentrate on the Indo-Pacific region particularly the Pacific, Timor-Leste, and Southeast Asia (Australian Government, 2020).
As a first response, Australia undertook provision of aid in the health crisis by supporting in the delivery of essential services to reduce immediate economic impact. Increased economic and social unrest is likely to put a strain on the global ruling order. Australia will focus on supporting its partner’s independence and sovereignty. It will also focus on interventions that promote social cohesion and stability in vulnerable regions. In the economic recovery front, Australia will support policy-making that will aim at rapid economic recovery and providing support to manage Covid-19’s economic impact through assisting towards sustainable growth (Australian Government, 2020).
The efforts made by the Australian government towards providing support to neighbouring countries in the wake of the pandemic is commendable and as such the interim policy seems to be well-focussed and positive. It is projected to help with the immediate concerns rising in the region due to Covid-19....
