The foreign currency chosen is ‘Rupee’, the currency of India, which is an emerging market
as per the World Bank list and definition of em
erging markets.
An analysis of the Indian Rupee against the US Dollar over the five year period 2006-2010,
clearly shows that there are fluctuating trends in the exchange rate for this vis-à-vis the US
dollar. In the year 2006, the exchange rate was varying between 44 and 46 rupees to 1 US
dollar. This rate showed a decline in 2007, when it went from 44 to 39 rupees to the US
dollar. In the year 2008, it was seen that this rate showed a steep upward rise to 48 rupees to
the dollar. Then, in 2009 we see that the exchange rate rose to 51 rupees to 1 US dollar by the
end of the first quarter and came down to 46 rupees to 1 US dollar by the end of the year.
Throughout 2010, this exchange rate stayed around 45 rupees to 1 US dollar with mild
fluctuations between 44 and 46 rupees. A comprehensive study shows that the rate has ranged
between nearly 20 per cent over this 5 year period. Thus, we see that during the 5 year period
ending 20120, the exchange rate first increased in 2006, then declined in 2007, thereafter was
continuously increasing in 2008 and 2009, till it reached its peak at 51 rupees to the dollar,
and finally declined thereafter to stay comparatively stable between 44 to 46 rupees to 1 US
