Systemic lupus erythematous ( SLE ) is a prototypic systemic autoimmune disease . In a research done by Sharon A. Chung on 1754 patients to determine the geographical precipitations of clinical presentations of SLE it was found that higher rates of photosensitivity have been observed in SLE cases of European descent. (Chung, Tian & Criswell, 2009, p.p. 2448-2456)
It involves a vast array of antibodies particularly antinuclear antibodies ( ANAs ) in which injury is caused mainly by deposition of immune complexes and binding of antibodies to various cells and tissues. SLE predominantly affects women . The fundamental defect in SLE is a failure of mechanisms that maintain self tolerance. . Greater risks in monozygotic twins( about 30 percent ) and in family members of people affected with SLE precipitate the fact that it has a genetic predisposition. The disease may be acute or insidious in onset and is typically a chronic, remitting and relapsing often febrile illness .Auto immune diseases are a failures of self tolerance , the immune system fails to distinguish self antigens from foreign ones and produce autoantibodies that attack body's own tissues.
In SLE there is formation of autoantibodies against DNA and other nuclear antigens resulting in accumulation of antigen-antibody complexes in blood vessels and other organs where they develop widespread connective tissue inflammation. (Saladin, Gan & Cushman, n.d., p.p. 836, 839)
The clinical presentation of SLE is quite variable and the American College of Rheumatology has established a complex set of criteria for the disorder. The patient can be presented with any of these clinical features. The revised criterion includes photosensitivity on 3rd category. There is a genetic predisposition to SLE . Photosensitivity is a skin rash as a result of unusual skin reaction to sunlight....
