Everyone had noticed that Paul’s behavior and academic performance at school had been deteriorating since the holiday break. The rumor was that Paul’s parents had announced their intent to separate and divorce after the family had “gotten through Christmas.” Paul’s geometry teacher was especially concerned that he had not turned in any homework since returning from break. His swimming coach noted that Paul had been consistently late for practice and had even missed a swim meet with no excuse. Some students said that Paul had been hanging with a new group of friends who were known to drink alcohol and smoke marijuana. His former friends said his moods were either depressed or almost manic. While the parental separation might explain some of this, there was great concern that Paul’s downward spiral could cost him academically and ultimately affect his postsecondary plans.
