Every time we thought we had a deal, a new complication would arise. Frequently, potential landlords wanted an equity position in the business. At other times, space we thought would be ours alone was supposed to be shared with the current occupant. On one occasion, we drank a celebratory toast with a government official signifying agreement— only to have that official lose his position the next day. It was very stressful. In mid-1990, we hired our Hungarian country manager, although at the time we didn’t know he was going to be the country manager.
