Ethnographic Critical Review Essay Assignment
In this assignment, you are asked to critically review an ethnography of your choice. A critical review answers the question of how well an author makes and supports their main argument/point/thesis. Your purpose is two-fold: First, you must briefly summarize the book and explain the author’s point of view, and second, you must make a judgment about the book, and support your judgment through critical evaluation. This latter portion is the meat and potatoes of your essay; thus, no more than one-third of your essay should be devoted to summary of the book. It is crucial that you have your own main argument as well as addressing the author’s main argument.
Note that your critical review can (and should) include both positive and negative elements. I ask that you cite AT LEAST 3 articles that have been assigned throughout the semester (your ethnography does not count toward these three) while evaluating the book.

A CRITICAL REVIEW OF MAM LOLA: A VOUDOU PRIESTESS IN BROOKLYN BERKELEY
Summary of the book
The famous ethnography of Karen McCarthy Brown, “Mama Lola: A Vodou Priestess in Brooklyn” presents the readers with
an insight of a typical Haitian life of the protagonist Mama Lola or Alourdes. This book has been published in 1991along with other prominent ethnographies like Terry Tempest’s “Refuge”. This book is a true account of the famous cult Voudou princess Marie Therese Alourdes Macena Margaux Kowalski or Mama Lola. This piece moves back and forth in time as it provides a glimpse of two lives Mama Lola has lived. The author launches a journey through time and space and paints an image of the old Haiti before Mama Lola’s birth. Haitian culture and religious practices are described in an unopinionated way in this book. This book starts with the mystical birth story of Mamma Lola and the allusion to spirits and magic continues throughout. The account also involves the reader into the strict family and social structure of the Haitian Vodou community. It also shows the child rearing practises and the strict discipline observed by the community. The book also elucidates on the relation of the church to the Vodou families and discrepancies in their belief system. This account is an important piece of work as the author describes the notions and beliefs of the entire Vodou cult. This account also sheds light on the social endeavours of Mama Lola which she aspires to take with the help of her guiding spirits. However, there is not a clear statement regarding the success of Mama Lola in solving the social issues even though the author recounts many instances of invoking spirits throughout the book. The book argues in favour of the author’s personal beliefs as she recounted in multiple occasions of her affinity towards Vodou practices.
Review
This book primarily is a personal account as the author herself was interested in the Vodou cult. The account offers an insight into the practices of the cult, especially in America. The main argument of this book revolves around...
