Ethical Decision Making

Mr. Huang, a grey-haired older individual wearing glasses and of apparent Asian background, has been evaluated and taken to hospital after a heavy fall in a local Asian grocery store, a short distance from his home. Mr. Huang lives with his son and daughter-in-law but tells paramedics in halting English that he is keen to go to hospital rather than bother his family at work. When he arrives at the local hospital, the emergency department staff notice that he seems to have bruises on his back that the fall today would not usually cause. Elder abuse is raised as a possible explanatory factor. As the emergency doctor/nurse, what cultural factors could be taken into consideration in your clinical decision making and decision whether or not to report abuse?
