Begin with a hook and then explain what makes a novel or play worth teaching in a classroom. What criteria should a text meet in order for it to be considered valuable or meaningful for students? End with a thesis statement that argues to what extent Romeo and Juliet is still relevant and worth teaching today. Your thesis should address at least 1-2 reasons that you believe makes Romeo and Juliet a text that should or should not be taught in ninth grade classes today.
Topic Sentence: Restates your overall claim from the thesis and one reason that you will prove in your body paragraph. Your topic sentence should also briefly state which example(s) or part(s) of the text you will use to prove your point. Use 2 quotations to support your reasoning. Don’t forget to include context and lead-ins for each quotation. For articles, you must include the author’s name and the title of the article as part of your lead-in. Your commentary or analysis for each quotation should explain how the quotation proves one of your reasons for why Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet should/should not be taught in the classroom. Include a concluding sentence that summarizes your main points and provides a transition to body paragraph 2.
Topic Sentence: Begin with a statement of why someone might disagree with your claim For example, you might say: Other students argue that…, Some people believe... , Some claim that… Use 2 quotations. One quote proving the counterargument, and one quote that refutes the counterargument and proves your overall claim. How does your evidence outweigh the opposing opinion? Don’t forget to include context and lead-ins for each quotation. For articles, you must include the author’s name and the title of the article as part of your lead-in. Your commentary or analysis for each quotation should explain how the quotation proves one of your reasons for why Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet should/should not be taught in the classroom.
Explain why you believe Romeo and Juliet should or should not be taught as part of ninth grade curriculum in schools. How should schools select books to teach in the classroom? Is there a better text that could be taught? What is the value in teaching classics such as Romeo and Juliet?
