AGED CARE IN AUSTRALIA
Introduction
    Australia’s population is getting older, due to longer life expectancy and low fertility rates. This means that the amounts of older people are increasing considerably in Australia. The population graph is inverted with older people and younger population.
Statistics relating to the aged population in Australia
     With the increase in the population, it is expected that by 2056, the amount of aged people will be 8.7 million older Australians (22 % of the total population). It has also been suggested that 12.8 million people (25 %) will be over the age of 65 years by 2096. The impact of the ageing population directly reflects the number of people that are in need of help in Australia. (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2018). The public aged-care system is already under strain, with fewer places than there is demand (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare, 2018). It is expected that by 2060, the demands in the services relating to aged care will only have increases, which would put an increasing pressure on the GDP of the nation. In 2016, almost a quarter of a million people roughly around 249,000 were using home care, transition care services, residential care or which is showing over a 31% increase since the last decade. Results of the 2016 national census show that one in six Australians is now aged over 65 (Australian Bureau of Statistics, 2019).
