The entire event of cinematography is linked with the script and the scene depiction by the director. So the cinematographer is a key person for a good cinema or a motion picture.
Traditional Film Cinematography:
Cinematography is the art by which the director of photography does the motion picture photography either by electronic means with an image sensor or by chemical means using a light sensitive film stock. The director of photography or the cinematographer is a very important link between the film’s director and the actors. The image of the object is transferred to an image sensor placed inside the movie camera to get the real image. This includes both art and science as it captures the moving objects for making a motion picture. The main person behind the lens or the camera is the one responsible for making the film better and attractive with sheer skill of capturing and manipulating the moving images.
Cinematography sets and supports the overall aesthetics and the mood of a film’s visual narrative. The images that the audiences see actually supports the elements in the film and support the story. The traditional film cameras generally capture either the natural or artificial light on a photographic film which is made up of layers of light-sensitive silver halide emulsion coated on a flexible base. Few of the devices that were used in traditional cinematography includes the mercury vapour lamps by Cooper Hewitt and also the Bell and Howell 2709 camera.
In earlier days’ normal traditional film cameras were used in this work. Though they had various disadvantages as the cameras used were heavier as compared to present day portable digital cameras.
