Details: You will use your essay plan as the basis for writing your research essay on a self-selected case study that explicitly focuses on a religious practice, movement, organisation, or a religious conflict. You can choose to explore something we have already looked at in class (a New Religious movement in a specific place, a spiritual practice like yoga, religious nationalism and conflict in a specific region of the world, Islamophobia or Islamophilia, white supremacy, religion and gender, etc.), or something new. The case study is intended as a way by which you can explore and unpackeitherof the following:



  1. The relationship between religion and globalisation.

  2. The relationship between religion and conflict.


More detailed information about the essay is available under the Assessment tab. You should read the information there carefully before your start working on your essay plan.


The two-page essay plan should include the following:



  • Essay title:provide a short descriptive title of no more than 20 words.

  • Essay question:introduce the focus and aim of your essay. i.e. What is the case study you are looking at? What is your research question?

  • Significance:What is the significance of this topic? What motivates you to explore this research question?

  • References:You must conduct some background research and provide at least 5 references ofscholarlysources (published/peer-reviewed books, book chapters, journal articles etc.) that you will use in your final essay. Use Harvard-style referencing only.


Formatting:Use 1.5 line spacing and 12 Times New Roman font.


Submit your essay plan via the Turnitin link available on iLearn.


The following criteria will be taken into account in assessing essay plans:


- Does the essay plan have an appropriate case study?


- Is there a clear research question?


- Is the significance of the research project clear?


- Is there sufficient evidence of literature search?


- Are the references cited correctly?


- Is the writing concise? Is there “fluff” that could be pared down?

The case study is based on Myanmar where the concept of peaceful coexistence had been challenged due to the religious traditions. There had been several initiatives, which were taken by Myanmar to address the challenges, which arose amongst the religious communities, which ensued to violent incident around the year 2012.
