Correlation Coefficient
Correlation coefficient is normally used to determine the relationship between two interval
measure variables. That is, when the two va
riables taken into consideration are continuous, then
Pearson correlation coefficient would be the most appropriate one to measure the strength and
direction of the relationship between them. In addition to the correlation coefficient, we need to
find the difference between causation and correlation as many studies wrongly relate correlation
and causation. If there is any relationship between two variables, then it doesn’t mean that one
variable influences the other variable and there will be presence of a causal relationship
The graphical representation of relationship between two variables is called scatter plot. Scatter
plot is one of the effective visual representations which also indicate the outliers in the dataset. It
is also easy to understand by people of all kind. If the plotted points move in upward direction, it
indicates that there exists positive linear relationship between two variables. on the other hand, if
the plotted points move in a downward direction, then it represents negative linear relationship
between two variables taken into consideration. . On the other hand, if the points fall all around
the x axis, then we can say that there exists no relationship between the two variables
The example in this study attempts to determine the relationship between payroll ($ 100 million)
and sales ($100,000), The correlation coefficient is calculated by using the formula given below
