Introduction
Australian Aboriginal communities or Australian Indigenous peopl
e, as they are commonly referred to include the native Torres Strait Islander people also, are believed to have first landed on the Australian continent around 45,000 years ago. Currently there are close to 500 different communities of Aboriginal peoples in Australia, all having their own language, geographical territories and usually consists of a large number of separate clans. Throughout the years Aboriginals have been stripped off their rightful belongings and more than half of them are currently confined to the outskirts of towns, forced to live in terrible conditions. Despite high diversity, certain cultures and values remain common among all the Aboriginal communities due to their common lineage.
Strengths of Aboriginal Culture
For majority of the Aboriginal communities practicing their traditional cultures is imperative in regaining their rightful place in the Australian society. As stated by Fejo-King (2013), the primary strength of Aboriginal culture is its affiliation with the collectivist kinship system, which is a dynamic structure defining the relationship of individuals with each other in terms of responsibilities and obligations. The upbringing of the children in order to be active community participants is considered as the collective responsibility of all community members. As informed by Ridani et al. (2015), this collective approach to children rearing involving the extended family and other community members is not just about keeping the children happy and safe but considered as a shared value system, which promotes bonding among the community people.
The collective approach of raising children also serves as a way to imbibe a sense of trust, confidence and security in the knowledge that other community members are also looking after their children. It also helps Aboriginal community parents with social and psychological support while simultaneously identifying risky situations for their child’s safety, practical child rearing support and stress relieving mechanism through collective sharing of responsibilities.
Aboriginal community people have garnered another crucial strength in terms of ensuring their children’s safety while giving them opportunities for developing their social and cognitive abilities at the same time. As supported by Liberman (2017), the traditional cultural values enable the Aboriginal children to learn their responsibilities towards their peers such as protecting one another, encouraging and working together. These responsibilities are passed onto generations primarily through unstructured plays, which also ensure that the children learn these behaviours at a young age and hence serve as role model for younger generations. This particular approach is often...
