Introduction
Social determinants of health are basically the factors or aspects that affect the health of individuals and are determined by the surrounding factors that includes social and physical environments. These may also be defined as the conditions or environment in which people may be born, live, work, play and perform other lifestyle activities. Social determinants of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS) would be the conditions that may reflect the disease and engagement of individuals. This assignment focuses upon ‘gender’ along with ‘stigma and discrimination’ as the major health determinants for the comparison of AIDS impact upon women in Swaziland and Australia.
Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) have been reported to impact Australian women with a much larger rate than women and sexual transmission have been identified as one of the major cause of spread, whereas sub-Saharan countries or African states such as ‘Swaziland’ have been reported to reflect a much higher AIDS percentage among women compared to Australia and the major reason identified behind this spread were sociocultural factors prevalent in Swaziland.
HIV/AIDS and women – The situation
Metsch, Philbin, Parish, Shiu, Frimpong and Giang (2015) suggested that it would be essential to consider the poor condition of women in Australia compared to men when it comes to HIV cases and its prevalence among women. One of the major factor identified behind the spared of HIV in Australia is sexual transmission, which may due to non-use of protection while having sexual contact.
Further, it would also be essential to consider that from epidemiological point of view Australia may have never faced HIV epidemic as faced by African countries and sates such as Swaziland. This is majorly because along with lack of education, Swaziland has also been found to possess lack of disease knowledge. Further, due to unhygienic conditions and increased drug abuse, factors responsible for the spread of HIV increases beyond sexual contact. Moreover, it has also been found that high HIV percentage among Swaziland’s population may be because HIV observation began in 1992 and people were not even aware of this. Further, a number of sociocultural factors have been to be associated with HIV spread, which has not been found in Australian women population (Logie et al., 2016).
Comparison between the Two Countries based on Social Determinant of Gender.
Department of Health, Australia (2019) basically suggests that women and men both have different lifestyles as well as life experiences due to variable and dynamic social as well as environmental factors. Therefore, these factors greatly impacts the health status therefore, it would be essential to target and identify the inequalities with respect to the persistence of AIDS among women and men.
Women in Australia have been identified to be impacted by HIV due to number of factors and being sexually active is one of them. Young girls and...
