The centennial commemorations of 1916 have given us a chance to reexamine and consider our occasionally conflicted connection with our difficult past. This relationship's central component rebel songs like Four Green Fields, Kevin Barry, Sean South of Garryowen, and A Soldier’s Song is one that is likewise due for review. The Indignant Muse: Poetry and Songs of the Irish Revolution, a collection of more than 500 songs and poetry written in the years leading up to and following the Easter Rising, was just released by Terry Moylan of Na Póbair Uilleann, the pipers' society. When we were younger, we all referred to them as rebel songs, although that name was essentially imposed from without. They turn to musical self-consolation when they haven't been able to accomplish their political or military goals, which is really just a way to make them feel better. Many of them are stories, while others are purposefully written to elicit a political response or arouse nationalistic sentiment (Anita). The United Irishmen created songbooks on purpose between 1798 and 1803 to try to incite support for their own cause. There are narrative ones, ones that are overtly political, poetic ones that speak of "my love who died for Ireland," and other such things. William Butler Yeats wrote the poem "Easter, 1916" in celebration of those who defied British rule over Ireland in that year. The poem honors Yeats' friends who perished in the uprising and gives him a chance to work out his conflicted feelings about it because he was not a lover of violence. Yeats compares everyday life to acts of bravery and praises people for their commitment to their principles. Taking care not to indicate a political viewpoint, Yeats claims that a "awful beauty is created" as a result of their bravery.
