With advancements in time, role of women in the so
ciety has evolved many times during different decades and eras. Though women in the modern times shoulder equal responsibilities as the men, widespread discrimination against women is evident through several incidents in the society as well as in the professional environment. In this essay, we will discuss about the role of women in the 1920s and will compare the marriages of the 1920s to the present times.
Role of Women in 1920
1920 was a post war period after the World War 1 ended in the year 1918. By 1920 women in US already had gained the right to vote, which was an outcome of the suffrage movement. Other significant changes were noticed not only in the role of women in their homes but also in workplaces and educational areas. Women started to believe that it was their duty and their right to take the political activities of the country quite seriously. Women began their journey of political equality. Women now started to ensure that their opinion makes a difference to the political situations of the country. As mentioned by Blee, there were certain critics of the suffrage movement, who believed that mentality of women can never be equal to that of men and therefore, they must focus on their household chores and their children only.
Considering the role of women in the economy of the country, it is necessary to mention that the number of working women in the 1920 increased by 25% (Pettit). This not only helped the women to be independent but their earnings contributed significantly in the economic growth of the country....
