Essay 3: Jennifer Pozner In “Ghetto Bitches, China Dolls, and Cha Cha Divas,” Jennifer Pozner gives specific examples of racist and sexist stereotypes on America’s Next Top Model. Pozner says “dehumanizing” minority women in media “carries very real consequences” for those girls’ and women’s self-esteem as well as for preventing violence against them and social, economic, and political rights (367).   If seeing negative stereotypes on television can have such a negative impact, how much of a positive impact can positive representation have? Choose a character (or a couple characters) from a popular television show, movie, or book that defies identity-based stereotypes. Why is that representation so meaningful?   You need to quote Pozner as well as two to three outside sources. You should quote specific moments and dialogue from your television show, movie, or book. I recommend you also quote academic research on how much representation there is for characters of that identity, on the stereotype, and on how impactful positive representation is for both people of that identity and for people outside of that identity.   (Conversely, you may choose to write a paper about a show/movie that does not reject or challenge stereotypes. For that paper, discuss why that kind of discourse may be harmful.)   Formatting:              Your essay MUST be · 4-5 pages in length (that’s 4 FULL pages) · Include a works cited (the 5th page) · In MLA Format o   Correct header o   Times New Roman o   1 inch Margins o   Triple check citations · Use quotes from the reading to support your argument · Submitted in class, a hard-copy, and on Canvas, electronically   For Writing Assistance: · See me for help during office hours o   Monday 1-3, Tuesday 11-1, by appointment · Visit the FAU Writing Center for in-person writing assistance. o   http://www.fau.edu/UCEW/ · For online writing information, visit the Purdue University Online Writing Lab (OWL) o   https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/747/01/ (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.   Criteria for Evaluation: · Argument: You must take a stance. Importance of positive representation in combating stereotypes
Human beings are not born biased. They do not have innate discriminatory or stereotypical attitudes towards anyone by nature. It is the attitude that they are taught
since birth that makes them develop prejudice and stereotypical regarding a particular gender, identity or ethnicity. During earlier times, it was simply social interaction that shaped people’s attitudes. However, with the development and now commonality of the media, it has become the first and most important influencer of attitudes and thoughts (Schemer, 739-757).
Even though the general attitude of people has changed regarding discriminatory behaviour in the West today, it is painful to see how the main media, Hollywood, continues to portray stereotypical roles for people of ethnicities and origins that are not white.
The blacks are generally portrayed as violent and tough, Asians are portrayed as nerdy and unattractive, middle-eastern Muslims are usually portrayed as terrorists and so on. The numerous movies portraying the same message regarding certain groups or ethnicities has negative impact of labelling an entire race or people with false identities. On discussing the perils of stereotyping, Pozner quotes from one Japanese girl,
“Before I was a model , I never thought of my ethnicity (198)”
Reflecting on the effects of such stereotypes, Pozner reflects that “When an entire class of people are seen as animals, it becomes hard to prevent violence against them and easier to justify denying them equal social, economic, and political rights (209)”.
Combating Stereotypes
Conversely, if Hollywood would take to demolishing and eradicating these stereotypes it would change the perception of the masses and create understanding and peace between people of different ethnicities and origins. While there are only a few films to list equal representations of African-Americans and Asians, movies like ‘The Black Panther’ and ‘Crazy Rich Asians’, released in 2018 could be a big break from the regular themes represented by Hollywood.
East-Asian Stereotypes
Stereotypes have been associated with East-Asians from as early as the late 19th century when there was a massive influx of East-Asians to Europe, America and Australia. They were...
