ENT Design Thinking INSTRUCTIONS Complete all 5 essay questions below. Each answer should include 350-500 words. Make sure you incorporate information and lessons learned from our work using the L&O Designing for Growth Field Book and from class discussions. You are encouraged to supplement your response to each answer with data you’ve found from credible sources beyond the book. Cite all sources. There should be no or minimal repetition in your answers across the five questions. See RUBRIC. 1. What is design thinking? How is it used? Why is it useful to the entrepreneur? 2. Assume that you are working on the following design challenge and provide examples of how you would go about enacting each of these 5 steps (i.e., what are 2 specific things would you DO in each of the 5 phases?) DESIGN CHALLENGE: Your professor has asked you to redesign a syllabus for maximum learning and student engagement. 3. 1. Design Thinking
Design thinking is a new age approach, which creates innovative solutions, so that needs of the customers, advancement of the technology and success of the business can be integrated. Three pillars, which desirability, viability and feasibility when intersects then the concept of design thinking emerges. It can be well explained through the design thinking process, which is made of five stages namely: empathize, define, ideate, prototype and tests.
IDEO is known for using is as a secret tool over years, which lead to its success. According to Black et al., this excessively stress on understanding user behavior, perceptions and the intensity of the problem. This is done by keep aside researchers feelings, thoughts and perceptions about the same.
It is used to find solutions where were never there by imagining oneself at the user’s place and how they feel while using it. Different solutions are created and they are checked as a part of feasibility study. This helps in arriving to the right and innovative solution for the problem defined. It is helpful for an entrepreneur in the following ways:
To face the challenge of innovation:
To enter into the market and be competitive it is important to serve customers with new and unique products or services. Design thinking helps an entrepreneur to find solutions, which are of superior nature, involves only cost for change and consists of lower risks. However, it is true while applying these outcomes business may encounter new challenges and trade off which need again a rigorous study.
Structured approach:
Experts say it is structured and linear approach, which is indeed true. In case of entrepreneurs, they do research from scratch; indulge in understanding customer perspectives and needs, which involve various stakeholders in the process so hat design and testing can be done through various experiments.
Customer discovery:
Through the studies of ethnography and sociology, customers are identified. This helps to understand which jobs can be done to provide them convenience. It tries to identify the need, which are hidden and can be act as an enhancer in customer experience. As per the opinions of Micheli et al., this act as raw material for creating products and services for the users. It is also called Gallery Walk. This is finally aligned with discovery, which helps in framing design and reducing the possibilities of constraints, which will decrease its impact. This will result in collaborative and creative efforts towards the solution generation.
2. Design Challenge
Step 1 Empathize
The first stage is a step towards empathic understanding of the problem. It involves conversing with experts so that deeper insights about the problem can be gained. It also helps to observe the physical environment, engage as a researcher and discuss with people in the system about their experiences and perspectives (Elsbach and Stigliani).
In order to understand the problem in current syllabus students will be asked to (i) debate on issues they have found in the syllabus and what kind of instructions they are looking for the simplified yet powerful learning, and (ii) studying the need of industry and expectation of market leaders from that course. It will help in...
