ENGL: 102: Writing Project 3: Joining a Conversation in a Field or Discipline For the third writing assignment, you will be composing a paper using multiple sources from an academic field or discipline of your choosing. You will be working to look at an academic conversation happening in the field or discipline, relying on research to investigate and listen to the ongoing conversation, and posing questions. You’re going to examine your topic of interest within the context of the discipline you chose. First, you will read and listen to what others in the discipline are saying about that topic, and then you’re going to advance that knowledge. You can borrow from questions other scholars are already asking in your discipline, or you can apply a question another discipline is asking to your own. I’m not asking you to create an original, unique idea. I’m asking you to consider what others are saying and to add your voice to the conversation. This assignment is guided by disciplinary specific contexts, and your writing should be focused on one conversation happening within the discipline. To help you begin thinking about some potential meaningful questions, I’m providing some examples that you might explore in your disciplinary contexts. These are potential conversations happening within those contexts. You will not respond to these topics, but find similar topics in the discipline you chose: · If you’re in a health-centered discipline, or studying a related field, you could consider thinking about questions like these: How has technology intersected with health? How has technology influenced the medical field and medical record keeping? How has technology, like wearable technology, influenced personal health? · If you’re in the education or studying a related field, you could consider thinking about questions like these: How does the U.S. value education? How do school districts influence available resources and demographics? How does the culture of the classroom, like large classroom sizes with hundreds of students, affect learning? · If you’re in the psychology department or studying a related field, could consider thinking about questions like these: What are the different types of motivations? How do those motivations influence human behavior? How do corporations market toward personality characteristics to motivate consumers? · You could also research further into how scholarship has tackled the questions you asked in your previous unit project, if relevant. The majority of this writing assignment is going to be driven by the research you do for this paper about a particular subject or topic in your disciplinary context, and the conversations that are happening. Therefore, this assignment is going to depend on you being able to summarize and synthesize the conversations occurring about that subject or topic. You’ll need to introduce and frame the conversation by providing specific examples of who is saying what about the subject, then bring those conversations together (synthesis) before adding to the conversation with your own voice. You’re being asked to include at least five different academic sources as evidence and support for this assignment. Requirements · Conduct extensive research on an ongoing conversation in your discipline / field of study · Summarize and synthesize the academic conversation on a subject / topic · Include at least five academic sources, different from the ones found for the Unit 2 project · Quote sources and provide sufficient evidence for claims · Insert your voice in the conversation after substantial summary and synthesis · Format appropriately: double-spaced, 1,500-1,750 words (6-7 pages), Times New Roman, 12 pt. font, 1” margins, MLA format Criteria for evaluation A starting point to our conversation on assessment which will be part of the criteria for evaluation: · The writer engages in research within their discipline about a specific subject / topic · The writer asks meaningful questions that are specific and narrow, inquiring about a subject, focusing on specifics · The writer sufficiently provides summaries of each academic source (at least five total) and analyzes the conversations happening about the subject · The writer synthesizes the conversations, using good transitions to help with the organization and detailing the voices occurring in the conversation · The writer has a clear, concise direction and stays on topic throughout the essay · The writer uses quotes to help provide evidence for the claims that are a part of the academic conversation; the quotes are seen as a complement to the voice; the quote creates support, and is not relied on too heavily · The writer includes their voice after they summarize and synthesize the academic conversation, adding to the conversation · The writing shows maturity in sentence structure and style; there are little errors or lapses in judgment Reflective Activity: In a 1-2 page letter or memo, reflect on your overall experience in reading existing secondary sources and doing research, exploring an entry point, coming up with your own thoughts about a current conversation, and writing the essay. The memo can be informal in voice, but it nevertheless should be clear, detailed, well-organized, and at least 300 words in length. It should include commentary on the changes you made during the drafting and revision process. In addition, you should also reflect on what you have learned about research, entering a conversation, knowledge building, and thought about your discipline of interest. Consider the following questions in your reflection: · What preconceived notions did you have about research, secondary sources, entering a conversation, and contributing your thoughts to a discipline? · What did you learn about all of the above by completing this assignment? · What knowledge/skills have you acquired by completing this assignment, and how will this knowledge benefit you in future academic writing situations, your future profession, and/or your everyday life?
