Working Title: Multiculturism and Combating racism being an immigrant
Multiculturism a
nd racism is on the rise with the growing numbers of immigrants in Canada. People emigrate in Canada for work, for making a livelihood and adapting themselves to the culture of Canada. Yet they have to hear racist remarks from the French and British colonized nation. The Multiculturism Act of 1971 passed by Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau was based on false promises that the culture can be transplanted and preferences for recognition of immigrant’s culture. But, such promises were restricted to the exoticizing theatres and festivals in Canada.
Hence, the emigrants agreed that multiculturism has not served their interest rather it has marginalized them from the Canadian society. It was racism which replaced multiculturism and made the dreams of the immigrants shattered.
Tolerance is Superficial and perhaps the highest goal one can expect of Canadian multiculturism (No Place like Home; Neil Bissoondath; Pg 305 stanza 13)
This can be evident from the provisional citizenship of Ben Johnson. He won the gold medal in 100 meter sprinter in the Seoul Olympics on behalf of Canada. Ben Johnson was a Jamaican immigrant. When he was tested positive for drug test and his medal was snatched away, the...
