Rank the three common commodity materials, lowcarbon steel, aluminum alloy, and polyethylene, by embodied energy/kg, Hm, and embodied energy/m3 , Hmρ, where ρ is the density, using data drawn from the data sheets of Chapter 15 (use the means of the ranges given in the databases). Finally rank them by embodied energy per unit stiffness (measured by Hmρ/E where E is Young’s modulus).
