Elias is a three-year-old boy who has been referred to the hospital by the family GP for admission to investigate a history of malaise, irritability and delayed motor development (not yet walking). Elias and his family have just arrived on the ward and the nursing team that you are working in has been allocated Elias to their patient load. Elias is accompanied by his father Joshua and mother Glenys, to whom Elias is clinging, and his four month old sibling Benji. The family have only been in Australia for six months having arrived as refugees from Somalia. Their understanding of English is still very limited.
While tolerating a solid diet Elias continues to breastfeed in tandem with his four month old sibling. He has been diagnosed with significant vitamin D deficiency. Both children have crusty yellow sores around their mouths and noses.
