Area of emphasis
The concept chosen was metamorphosis, as represented in the grade 3 curriculum in
the section “Butterfly: from egg to adult”. In the main lesson plan, the life cycle of the
butterfly was drawn on the board, starting with concepts that were already familiar to the
students, such as plants and bacteria in the soil.
The guided practice consisted of drawing a life cycle on the board and getting the
students to replicate it. As the life cycle was being drawn, it was filled in with pictures
elicited from the students themselves, which they then copied out in their notebooks,
including annotation for particular parts of the butterfly in order to fit in with their existing
knowledge about insects.
Independent practice was provided by the next activity, in which the students wee
asked to draw a six panel cartoon of the life of a butterfly. They could also draw the life cycle
of another creature that they knew underwent metamorphosis, like a frog, if they thought they
knew it well enough.
