ECU300 Assignment One Notes Introduction The purpose of the unit ECU300 is to reintroduce students to the Visual Arts, Music, Dance and Drama and the Health and Physical Education curriculum with emphasis on integrating these subject areas particularly within Movement and Dance. This unit has been sequenced towards the end of the course and is an opportune time to; revisit existing material, revise and reflect what has been learnt, refresh existing information and update skills to be ready for the classroom. The task for Assignment One differs from previous assessments you may have experienced. The purpose of the assignment is to discuss and reflect your understanding of your views of the Arts or Physical Education through a reflective autobiographical lens. This task may be both confronting and rewarding for you. The philosophical premise originates from the American author and educator Parker J. Palmer (b.1939). His book The Courage to Teach: Exploring the Inner Landscape of a Teacher's Life discusses the connection between the inner authenticity and integrity of a teacher and how this is manifested in ones practice. “Good teaching cannot be reduced to technique; good teaching comes from the identity and integrity of the teacher.” You do not need to purchase Parker Palmer’s books – rather show an awareness of the influences in how you will teach this subject. Specifications of the assessment task PowerPoint slides were selected as it provides scope for creativity. Both text and images may be used here. Multi-media may also be used provided that it can be uploaded and accessed for assessment. In the word count, if there is only text, the expectation is 1,500 words. If you use images and multi-media, then the word count is reduced accordingly provided you address the question. You may also submit an accompanying script provided that the total is 1,500 words equivalent for assessment. The wording ‘approximately 10 slides’ was decided so that you can focus on the task without constraints for creativity. In order to complete the task, we expect that there will be a minimum of eight slides and maximum of 12 slides. Please include references in your work inclosing images and multi-media. The task is to prepare the PowerPoint on The Arts or Physical Education The Arts- (a) Making- (description of the slide and what you are doing.) and (b) Responding (responding to the slide and how you felt in the activity) OR Physical Education Movement in Physical Education Sport – skills Reflect on: (i) the influence the activities had on your life, (ii) your well-being, (iii) your ability to be a critical thinker, (iv) problem solving, (v) displaying creativity, (vi) innovation and resilience. Below are some points to consider when constructing your PowerPoint: Discuss from your background what has influenced you in either The Arts of Physical Education. Were the tasks appropriate to your stage of learning and development? Consider how the subject was similar or different to how it is taught in the current Australian and/or State/Territory Curricula. What was your learning style, and how will this influence your teaching style? Is this subject part of your current life? How did/does it impact your sense of well-being? This may be your physical, psychological or emotional well-being. Is there a connection between the subject and critical thinking? Is so, how? If not, why not? Is there a connection between the subject and problem solving? Is so, how? If not, why not? How can you display creativity through the subject? Is there a connection between the subject and innovation and resilience? Is so, how? If not, why not? These are important points to consider, especially if you are planning to apply for a job and the Early Learning Centre/School wants to know your background in the subject and why you want to teach an area of specialisation.
