Economic changes promoted shifts in cultural values and social relations. In contrast to traditional ethics of equality and generosity, greater differences in wealth and rank emerged. The number of horses people owned became a symbol of their fortunes, as the accumulation of property became a desired goal. People increased the number of their horses by buying them, or, more commonly, by raiding other peoples. Wealthy families enhanced their social prestige by being generous to others.
