Part A – Case Studies with short answer questions Student instructions Read the following case studies, then answer the questions that follow each. Case study 1 Rosalee, 4 years old, has been learning to ride her two-wheel bike. When she comes to Gavin’s family day care home, he notices that she has dark bruises on her legs. Gavin asks her about them, and she tells him they are from learning to ride her bike. The next day, Gavin notices that one of the marks on Rosalee’s legs is more like a welt than a bruise and is shaped in a strip. Rosalee seems to continue playing as normal, but later in the day when she is trying to do handstands, her skirt flips up and Gavin sees she has a dark red welt across her lower back. Gavin asks Rosalee about the mark and she tells him she just fell. Gavin decides to call his supervisor. He explains what he has seen and his supervisor suggests she comes over to support Gavin while he makes a report. Gavin calls the Department of Children and Families (the relevant agency in the Northern Territory) and makes a notification. You think that Cindy’s pain might be related to a dental issue, as sometimes she has difficulty eating and you can see one of her teeth seems to be a little decayed. You mention this to Cindy’s mum, but she says that she is a single mother who qualifies for Parenting Payment but cannot afford a dentist because of her low income. She tells you that dental care is not covered by Medicare and Cindy has never been to a dentist. Answer the following questions. 1.Research information about the Australian Government Department of Human Services Child Dental Benefits Schedule on the Department of Human Services website. a) Why does Cindy qualify for dental benefits? Enter your response here: Office use only Assessor Feedback Trainers Name, Date Case study 3 Isabella is an educator who works in an early intervention service that provides targeted support to vulnerable children and families. The families attending the service are culturally and linguistically diverse. They include a: • devout Muslim family • newly arrived Indian family with little English • family who follows a strict vegan diet • family who has alternative views on medication and health care • single parent family where the mother caring for the children has depression • family with a father who has a gambling addiction • Aboriginal family. Isabella is aware that each of the families has their own vulnerabilities, so she attempts to support them and provide early intervention actions to every family as much as possible, rather than waiting for issues to arise. Cherry Tree Lane Early Learning Centre was established in 1984. The Centre provides care and education for children from birth to school age. It operates Monday to Friday, 7.30am to 6.00pm, and cares for up to 56 children daily. Morning tea,
lunch, afternoon tea and nappies are provided.
The current staff:child ratios at the Centre are:
0-2-year-old children – 1:4 staff / child
2-3-year-old children – 1:8 staff / child
3-5-year-old children – 1:10 staff / child.
Educators at the Centre are currently developing an environmental strategy. The strategy is to help them implement sustainable practices across each of the rooms at the Centre; they hope to make sustainable practices a part of the daily routine.
