Each student will write a strategic analysis report of NOT more than 2500 words. The report should demonstrate that the student has thoroughly researched their topic. Students should use examples of business practice from the scholarly journals papers, conferences, books and professional magazines to support their arguments. The strategic analysis will be on a local company. The report consists of two parts and should cover the following requirements:


PART 1
(External analysis)




  1. Business background




  2. What industry is it?




  3. General environment analysis (economic, physical, sociocultural, global,


    technological, political/legal and demographic – and work out what the important


    facts are).




  4. The industry environment ((i.e., supplier power, buyer power, potential entrants,


    substitute products and rivalry among competitors) and explain briefly what is


    significant for each).




  5. Competitive environment (Is there a strategic group that you need to take account


    of? What is the rivalry like in this group? What capabilities do the relevant firms


    have? What strategies do they follow? What threats do they represent?)




  6. Opportunities and threats








    PART 2
    (Internal analysis and proposal)




    1. The firm’s resources, tangible and intangible




    2. Capabilities identification (explain the capabilities carefully to indicate what the firm


      really does.)




    3. Core competency analysis (For each capability, indicate which of the four tests for a


      core competency it meets).




    4. Propose a suitable information system solution that meets the chosen company


      needs.




    5. Evaluate the proposed system and provide your recommendations




    Submission Requirements:


    The research should include a list of at least seven (7) references and a bibliography of the wider reading done to familiarize oneself with the topic.

Qantas airlines have been referred to as Australia’s largest airlines which connect almost 1,000 destinations globally. Late with deregulation scenario unfolding and with the shutdown of Ansett Airways several low-cost rival companies entered in the market and this intensified the competition in the market. This study takes into consideration the strategic analysis of the Qantas Airlines. This report will take into consideration the environmental analysis and industry environment analysis of Qantas Airlines. After that competitive environment and opportunities and threats, Qantas airlines have are also discussed in this study. Qantas tangible and intangible resources, Capabilities identification and Core competency analysis is also included in this report. Finally, a suitable information system solution that meets the needs of Qantas airlines and evaluation of the proposed system is also discussed in this study.
Business background
Qantas airlines is an airline company which has its operations in Australia. The company started its operations in Queensland then shifted its head office to Sydney. The company has domestic as well as international operations. The company is engaged in the sale of international as well as domestic holiday tour including the supporting activities which are required. The major countries of operations of the company are: Australia, New Zealand, Asia, North and South America, Africa, and European regions. The company has strongly focused on maintaining safe operations and world class standard for its aviation and flights. (Annual Report 2017)
There are different segments which are operated by Qantas airlines and the company reports its segments as: Qantas Domestic, Qantas International, Jetstar Group, Qantas Loyalty, Qantas Freight, and Corporate.
Qantas Domestic is the segment which takes care of different brands which includes Qantas, Network Aviation and Qantas link. Qantas domestic takes into consideration all the domestic air transportation. The company has linked all the metropolitan areas as well as different regions and various regional hubs of Australia. The company has its operations in more than 58 metropolitan cities.
Qantas International segment is the segment which is classified as a premium service provider for the overseas travels. This segment provides services to different international destinations which includes Australia, New Zealand, Asia, North and South America, Africa, the Middle East and Europe.
Jetstar group is the segment with low cost airlines for the domestic as well as International travels. It offers its service services across Australia, New Zealand and the Asia Pacific region. It also has holding in Singapore, Japan, Hong Kong, Vietnam etc.
Qantas loyalty majorly focus on the Australian and New Zealand customers. This segment focuses on different program partners as well as Qantas frequent flyer members.
Qantas freight segment is the segment which focus on freight service which includes the ground handling charges airport to airport air linehaul and is supported by different trucking and transportation companies and courier companies. The company has more than 21 cargo handling terminals and has its international freight operations from Australia and Asia, New Zealand and the Americas, and Asia and the Americas.
Considering the geographic classification and segmentation, the group has been classified under two geographies which are the Australian and Overseas operations. The group revenues for its domestic operations accounted for 71.3% of total revenues whereas the overseas operations accounted for 28.7% of the total revenue.
Industry Analysis
Qantas Airlines operates in an Airline industry which offers domestic as well as international passenger transportation as well as freight transportation. The airline industry is a highly regulated industry and has high competition. The airline industry has different international players which includes American Airlines, Southwest airlines, Air Asia, Luftansa, Emirates and other national and international airline companies.
Airline industry is highly regulated and concentrated industry. The companies in the airline industry has strongly focused on technology integration and managing the costs and other aspects.
General environment analysis
Environmental analysis is the analysis which helps in analysing the environment from different perspective. The analysis of the external environment helps in designing the strategies for the company as the external environment affects the company as well as other aspects which has can affect the strategy of the company.
