Personal Ethics Tool (PET) Project 150 Points Due Date: no later than December 5th , 2017. Learning Objective: To familiarize students with various ethical theories and frameworks for ethical decision making while integrating this knowledge into an individualized personal ethics tool for making ethical decisions. Instructions: · Each student will develop and adopt their individualized version of a Personal Ethics Tool (PET). This tool should integrate the concepts and ideas that the student deems necessary to create an individualized framework for making ethical decisions. The tool should be able to be used by the student in the future when an ethical dilemma arises. · The final submission should reflect the student’s integration and application of the materials studied during this course. The instructor will evaluate each submission based on: 1 Creativity (40%), 2 Application of ethical knowledge, ethics concepts (40%) and 3 Presentation (20%). · Before you begin this assignment, you should have completed your study of Chapters 1 – 4 in your textbook. This material will provide you with the appropriate background information on various schools of thought regarding approaches to business ethics in the accounting profession and the possible frameworks for ethical decision making. · Creativity is of utmost importance in developing the tool as each student will develop a tool that best reflects their individual approach to decision making and what ethics means to them. The tool can take many different forms but is not limited to -- a written document, a poem, a song, a recipe, a work of art, a flowchart, a video, a game -- anything that is both meaningful and practical for the student. Refer to the samples of student work provided in Blackboard from previous terms. · The tool should also represent an application of the knowledge gained by the student during the course. The student may choose to adopt a particular ethical theory, a portion of a theory, or maybe even a hybrid approach, opting to combine certain aspects of different theories in developing an individualized tool. The tool should also include a framework for making the actual decision. · Distance learning students will create a 5 – 7 minute presentation on Voice Thread which shows the PET developed by the student and how it can be applied to solve an ethical dilemma. Think of this as an instructional video that you would develop and post to YouTube for others to view. Your Voice Thread should be shared with the other members of the class for viewing. ACNT 1335Fall 2017 - Stephens PET Project Daily Makeup Routine – Personal Ethics Tool While brainstorming to create a tool to practice ethical behavior, I had one requirement in mind. I wanted to make sure that it was something I would do everyday. Ethics are so important in the workplace and also in our everyday lives in the way we behave and interact with others. I decided that I would create a personal tool that worked around my daily makeup routine. First, I started with foundation. Foundation is the base that goes first before applying anything else to ensure an even skin tone. I named the foundation “honesty,” because I think that honesty is the most important characteristic to have if one is to be ethical. I do not think that a person can be ethical without first possessing honesty. Second, I applied blush, which in this case represents integrity. In my opinion, it is the second most important thing compared to honesty. Integrity represents the truthfulness of one’s actions and the moral character of a given person. There are many different shades of blush, which represents a person's integrity consisting of different morals. Next, I used eye shadow in order to brighten up my eyes and draw some attention to them. The eye shadow I utilized is called “virtue ethics.” Virtue ethics is the practice of being a morally good person and practicing good virtues. It is the use of performing actions with good intentions, which belong to a moral being. It is important to practice virtue ethics to be ethical because it relies on the behavior and morals of the person for the ethical behavior to be carried out. I think a person should be virtuous in order to behave ethically and not just follow rules; it should be one of their characteristics. Before the last step, I applied mascara and this mascara exhibits “fairness.” Fairness is the idea of treating everyone equally. This becomes a lot easier to do if one is already practicing honesty and integrity. The best example of depicting this attribute is the practice of insider trading. If a member becomes aware of information and relays it to the wrong people it would not be fair to the rest of the general public if this person uses the information for their benefit. We need to make sure that any knowledge we encounter as accountants stays confidential and is not shared with people that will use it for the wrong reasons. Lastly, I used bronzer around my face to give myself a little more color and that embodies “consequentialism.” The use of consequentialism ensures that the ends justify the means. If any end goal in an ethical dilemma is important enough or righteous enough, then the method to get there is not of concern. If telling the truth or blowing the whistle means that the public will be well aware of an entity’s malpractice, even if one gets fired in the process, the ends have justified the means. It is important to not be selfish in the process of keeping one’s ethics in line because ultimately there are always other people at stake and we need to be fair to all. This tool sets me up for the most success daily since I will have my ethical practices with me everyday. If ever faced with an ethical dilemma, I know that I have been practicing honesty, integrity, fairness, virtue ethics, and consequentialism and can face anything head on while also guaranteeing success for myself. Below is a video of exactly how to apply your ethical behavior everyday, it is all in moderation but all-important to look your best and act most ethically. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgICBX_eysA Personal Ethics Project “I Choose Happy” by Inspired by and to the tune of Bobby McFerrin’s “Don’t Worry Be Happy” url: http://youtu.be/oYNgvn3ZNOI APPLICATION DOCUMENT I have chosen a song to assist me with my choices when an ethical dilemma arises. Throughout the song I give examples of how I make choices and what guides my ethical decision-making. First and for most, all of my actions must be legal. So if there is anything illegal about the option I will not choose to make that decision to go forward. After that I tend to fall into the consequentialism way of thinking. I make choices that will produce the most happiness for those involved. In my song I mentioned not wanting to do anything illegal not just because I did not want to go to jail, but I did not want others to pay the bail, this would make them unhappy. Secondly, I incorporate rule utilitarianism. As a mother I encourage my children to tell the truth at all times and I lead by example. This is how they found out that there was not a Santa Claus at an early age. If a choice depends on my honesty, then the choice is already made because I choose to be honest regardless of the cost or judgment. Thirdly, I am very much a believer that all humans have a right and duty to do is best for others, even when it doesn’t meet their own happiness. So I practice deontology as well. If the decision is my duty to provide a right obligation to another person, then I will make the choice to accept that this is a “moral law” and I should do it unconditionally. Finally, my overall personal ethical code of living is by virtue ethics. I am a truly happy person and I measure my life holistically in that way. I do my best to make choices that allow me to live by Proverbs 31:25 - 31. I make decisions based on my many character traits, which I work hard to preserve and keep positive. Accounting EthicsMay 5, 2015 Recipe for Ethical Decision Making 1 cup honesty1/3 cup justice 1 cup integrity1/3 cup utilitarianism ½ cup virtuous behavior1 tablespoon legality ½ cup decision making skills1 tablespoon fairness Use this recipe when faced with an ethical situation. First, preheat oven to 350 degrees. Mix all ingredients together in a large mixing bowl, one at a time. Starting with honesty and integrity, think about the importance of being open with your decision, with telling the truth, and what the consequences might be if you do not. Are you doing the right thing even when nobody else is looking? That is the true meaning of having integrity and character. Next, mix in virtuous behavior. Remember that: “a good name is to be chosen rather than great riches, and favor is better than silver or gold.” (Proverbs 22:1). Also, “whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus.” (Colossians 3:17) While adding the decision making skills, answer the following questions: would I be comfortable if this decision would be on the front page of tomorrow’s newspaper? Will I be proud of this decision? Would my parents be proud of this decision? Is this action/decision in accordance with the company’s mission and code? Does this feel right? Add the 1/3 cup of justice and the 1/3 cup utilitarianism, respectfully. The decision you are making should both be a fair distribution of benefits and burdens, as well as maximize the net benefits to society as a whole. Lastly, mix in the remaining ingredients: legality, then fairness. Have you examined the stakeholder interests? Is the decision legal for society at large? Is it fair? Mix all of the ingredients thoroughly. Make sure each ingredient has been given adequate consideration, and make your decision in an appropriate, sound matter. Pour in a greased, 13x9 glass baking pan, and bake for 30 minutes. Yield: an ethical decision. My personal ethics tool is in the form of a recipe. My grandmother and mother are the most Christian, virtuous, ethical women I know. I am an avid baker now because of them; we spent countless hours together in the kitchen when I was younger. As such, developing a recipe was very meaningful for me. The ingredients I chose for this recipe are ingredients that are important to me, whether I have learned about them from life experiences, or from this class. The first two ingredients are honesty and integrity. I have always been taught that honesty is the best policy. We have seen
