Each participant will read Jay MacLeod’s Ain’t No Makin’ It and provide(1)a brief summary of the book’s findings and(2)a sociologically informed response to this question: How important were (1) the social environment of Clarendon Heights, (2) racism/classism, and (3) personal choices in shaping thelife chancesof the Hallway Hangers and the Brothers? Explain whether these three (3) factors are equally important to both groups of boys. This succinct meditation (2 pages maximum, double-spaced) will constitute 10% of your final grade. I recommend you take a draft to theUniversity Writing Support Center(Lommen 95) to have it checked for grammar and spelling infractions since I will consider syntax in my assessment. I require a bibliography for all scholarly sources (including the MacLeod text).
