Dynasty Travel offers cruises to the Caribbean and often discounts unsold tickets as the sailing date approaches. These last-minute deals were studied by comparing the price of an inside stateroom (x, in dollars) with the number of days before sailing (y). A random sample of last-minute cruise deals was obtained, and the data are given in the following table.
Find Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient, and interpret this value. Do these data suggest that cruise prices are reduced at the last minute? Justify your answer.
Farmers consider heavy molasses to be a high-energy food for cattle. In a recent study, the percentage of digestible energy (x) was compared with the percentage of protein (y) in heavy molasses. Random samples of various brands of molasses were obtained. The percentage of digestible energy and of protein were carefully measured. Compute Spearman’s rank correlation coefficient. Use this value to describe the relationship between the percentage of digestible energy and the percentage of protein in heavy molasses.
